Demonstration in front of Sanimax: “enough is enough”

Over a hundred people demonstrated on Saturday morning, in front of the factory Sanimax, in the montreal borough of Rivière-des-Prairies, to require its removal.

“Enough is enough. It stinks!” could be read on placards of demonstrators exasperated. “We will not be hostages of Sanimax”, has launched one of the organizers of the event.

It is because of the odor of putrefaction emanating from the plant that the citizens of Rivière-des-Prairies want her to leave the borough.

The mill Sanimax is specialized in the recovering of farm animals dead, used cooking oil or animal skins and organic materials.

“After a long confinement to the house, we should have the same right to enjoy the beautiful weather that the rest of the world. But we have another “virus” that has existed for a long time, and that requires us to remain in confinement,” said the committee Sanimax SOS, a group bringing together several hundreds of citizens of the district, in a press release.

Each summer, when temperatures rise, a smell of carcasses abandoned in the sun for days”, is spreading in the district, according to the citizens.

“We bought a house, we pay taxes like everyone else, and we must have the same rights, on our property or in our neighborhood. The right to breathe clean air without feeling uncomfortable, to have the taste of vomit, have a headache, have a gag reflex and even chest pain is ABSOLUTE,” added the committee Sanimax SOS.

“Too many false promises, Sanimax should leave. It is enough!” wrote another citizen on a sign at the event.

According to the committee Sanimax SOS, nearly 300 people who were present at the event.

“If you want change, you need to be part of the change. Together, we can and we’re going to do to change things for the benefit of our entire community,” wrote the citizen’s group on his page Facebook.

“Our request is quite simple : the three levels of government have an action plan in place by December for the relocation of this private company. And it’s already happened, so it can arrive in Rivière-des-Prairies. Too much is too much”, concluded the committee Sanimax SOS.

Sanimax takes things seriously

For its part, the company said in a press release “take the lead to address the concerns of the citizens of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles”.

“Sanimax deploys since over a year of practical measures relating to the transportation of organic matter and respond to direct needs expressed by citizens and elected officials,” says Vincent Brossard, vice-president of operations at Sanimax.

Exacerbated by the summer heat, the smells that bother the citizens have compelled the company has adapted its operations and its logistics to accommodate the passage of trucks-trailers, by a street further away, aimed at mitigating the impacts on the community.

“Among the measures put in place include, for example, a strengthening of the program of training of the awareness of the drivers transporting the organic matter to the implementation of systems, followed by conduit”, can we read in the press release.
