While Quebec continues to déconfinement, several dentists might not be ready to reopen their doors next week.
The recommendations of the ministry of Health for the masks and the ventilation standards were amended on may 22, just a week and a half before the planned re-opening of offices of the dentist on the 1st of June.
The dentist Danièle Larose has dedicated his time to emergency consultations in his office, but must also find the time to prepare for the grand re-opening.
“Before, we had certain standards of ventilation, and now, we have added two to three times more regulations at this level. Therefore, the air units that it had already realised, is what returns it? How do you find these air units there?” wonders Dr. Larose.
According to the new guidelines, the type mask N-95 is now mandatory for the vast majority of procedures. The challenge continues to be the supply.
The Dental Clinic Beaubien has enough protective gear for a week of operation, but impossible to see further.
“[The masks] are very difficult to find and very expensive. The prices have exploded to the level of these masks… there is a great lack and has zero government assistance,” said Dr Raja Hanna, surgeon dentist.
“There are some of these measures that may be of extreme care, and then actually, in many cases, it may delay our opening,” says Dr. Carl Tremblay, president of the Association des chirurgiens dentistes du Québec.
The Ordre des dentistes du Québec recognizes that there may be delays and promises to follow the situation closely.
“We are conducting currently a consultation with dentists in order to get a clearer picture of the situation. This will enable us to assist members, in collaboration with all partners, to help them meet this important challenge,” says Guy Lafrance, president of the Ordre des dentistes du Québec.
This challenge of logistics will also be significant costs for dentists, and so, perhaps, repercussions for patients.
