Depositing bulky waste in Nîmes: fines of up to 1,500 euros

Two thirds of dumping of bulky items on the sidewalk is illegal. The City and the Agglomerate are raising their voices. Controls are reinforced and fines may fall: up to 1,500 euros!
Deterioration of the living environment, hygiene and additional costs to evacuate them… Bulky items left anywhere at any time on the sidewalks are increasingly annoying Nîmes Métropole, which has the competence for "collection and treatment of household waste" and therefore bulky items. With the environment brigade and the municipal police of the City of Nîmes, the two communities are increasing their resources to say stop to this incivility.
An increase of 120% in five years
Because, despite the establishment of a free service open to all (read box), irregular deposits continue to increase. The Agglo has even noted an increase of nearly 120% in recent years: 7,853 deposits in 2019 compared to 17,340 in 2023. " ;Today, these irregular deposits represent almost two thirds of the bulky items collected, insists Nîmes Métropole.
A free service, as easy as a phone call
The city has set up a completely free bulky items removal service by appointment. Ideal for all those who cannot travel to one of the three Nîmes recycling centers. Two solutions: make an appointment by telephone at 0 800 420 420 or directly online via the site or the Monservicedéchets.com application available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In 2023, the annual cost of removing and processing bulky items will amount to more than one million euros; for the 28 161 removals made, 17 340 were irregular deposits. Of the overall cost of processing these bulky items, more than 600,000 euros annually are attributable to irregular deposits.

Faced with this degraded situation, City and Agglo are taking new, stricter measures."The agents of Nîmes Métropole will place a flag on the illegal dumps spotted and will report them to the municipal police for a search for clues", warns the community. "If the authors of the deposits are identified, they may be fined up to 1 500 € ".

"In addition to the significant cost, irregular deposits are a real nuisance for the living environment! However, making an appointment is very simple, users need to make more use of this service, which is completely free!" recalls Bernard Angelras, vice-president president of Nîmes Métropole delegated to the environment, collection and treatment of waste.
"The environment brigade includes specially trained and sworn agents for the fight against irregular deposits. Additional means to be more responsive and curb this phenomenon of growing incivility, specifies Richard Schieven, deputy mayor responsible for public security .
