Quebecer Leylah Fernandez and her compatriot Rebecca Marino both advanced to the final qualifying round of the Doha tournament on Sunday in Qatar.

Fernandez, 39th in the world, first erased a one-set deficit to beat Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska (102nd) 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The winner s was quickly given the lead with a break in the third game of the match, but her rival immediately came back to even serve before taking the set away. Fernandez, however, started the next two sets with breaks without flinching afterwards.

Marino (74th) proved the odds wrong by defeating Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 38th in the WTA rankings. She did it in three sets of 6-3, 3-6 and 6-4.

Both women excelled on return of serve as 23 break points were contested. The Canadian, however, had the advantage with six breaks in 13 occasions against five in 10 for her opponent. She was also slightly better with the balls in hand, slamming 11 aces.

The opponents of the two maple leaf representatives were not yet known in the morning.
