This Friday, September 27, at IMT Mines Alès, doctor Vincent Valinducq, who is speaking on the show “Bonjour” on TF1, will be talking about the role of caregivers.
Following the publication, a year ago, of his best-selling book I became the parent of my parents (Stock), the doctor Vincent Valinducq will come to discuss, this Friday at IMT Mines Alès, the role of caregivers in our society, between greatness and disappointment in the face of the task to be carried out. Asked, he answered our questions at length: « For 14 years, with my father and my brother, I was a caregiver to my mother who, at the age of 50, began to show signs related to Alzheimer's disease. Then, little by little, she began to lose the simple gestures of everyday life. » Being with the sick person requires great availability from all those who surround her on a daily basis, especially since she is being cared for at home.
A book of hope
Her book also tells the story of people stuck in difficult situations: « I wanted to write this book because, although I am a doctor, I was a caregiver myself. The fact remains that I have been confronted with terrible personal situations. I found myself extremely alone and sometimes without knowing where to turn. This book is primarily intended for caregivers to make them feel more comfortable in this heavy task. » A way of providing testimony and help to all those who are in this situation, whether a husband for his wife, or a mother for her child … since, he proclaims: « To love is to help. »
Without forgetting that the caregiver, heavily invested in his mission, can also put his health in danger. « This can cause sleep disorders, muscle pain… All of this can affect morale. To be a good caregiver, you have to be in good health. » Hence the role of associations that come to provide support to all those who are sometimes in distress and feel unable to cope any longer with the condition of the patient they are supporting.
