Tory British Prime Minister Liz Truss on Monday congratulated the leader of the post-fascist Fratelli d'Italia party, Giorgia Meloni, on her “success” in the Italian legislative elections, stressing that their two countries are “close allies”.

“Congratulations to Giorgia Meloni on the success of her party,” Ms. Truss tweeted, adding, “from supporting Ukraine to managing global economic challenges, the United Kingdom and Italy are close allies”.

The British reaction contrasts somewhat with those of France, the European Union, Germany or Spain , while Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki hailed him “a great victory”, and Hungarian nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban welcomed a “well-deserved victory”.

Giorgia Meloni, 45 years, and her Fratelli d'Italia party came out on top in the Italian legislative elections on Sunday in a context of strong abstention.

With an absolute majority in Parliament, the leader, with her allies Matteo Salvini of the League (anti-immigration) and Silvio Berlusconi of Forza Italia (right) will try in the coming days to form a government.
