Dogs can experience stress together with the owners
Swedish scientists under the leadership of Anne-Sophie Sundman of Linienstra University decided to test an interesting hypothesis about dogs – namely, whether the stress of human impact on the condition of his pet. Their study involved 58 people and their dogs of two different breeds – Shelties and collies, according to Scientific Reports.

The researchers looked at how the stress level of dogs and their owners are affected by their personal qualities. For this, they used the questionnaire “Big five” to humans and its analogue for dogs (responses to the second questionnaire gave the hosts). So, the scientists found that neuroticism owners with the level of cortisol (one of the major biomarkers of stress) dogs correlates negatively, and openness to experience and consciousness were positive.
Thus, the authors made the assumption that dogs can reflect the level of stress experienced by their owners. It is necessary to clarify that an interconnection – only correlation that was independent from other variables that may affect stress – for example, the level of activity.
As for effective ways of lowering stress levels (at least in humans), in recent work researchers have shown that lower levels of cortisol (and other stress biomarker alpha – amylase) may be a pastime in the fresh air: a leisurely walk or sitting on the bench.
