Les halles municipales de Béziers ont fermé leurs portes ce samedi 3 février, en attendant les travaux de rénovation et leur deuxième vie… AJ ET DP – Midi Libre

The municipal halls of Béziers lowered the curtain this Saturday, February 3 and will only reopen this fall, after renovation work. The crowd was there, between joy and sadness.

Some have their eyes clouded by the emotion of goodbyes while others have the smile of festive days, to the sound of the DJ from the bar-restaurant Les Carniv’halles, or the beautiful voice of Nolika in concert at the Le Marina bar.

This Saturday, February 3, the central halls of Béziers drew the curtain on a whole section of Béziers life. When they reopen next fall, after eight months of intense rehabilitation work, the face of this covered market will have changed completely (read our previous editions).

A new manager, the Basque company Biltoki, will be in charge and many traders and stallholders, historic or not, will no longer be part of the adventure. A heartbreak for many regulars, who deplore the end of their habits, but a glimmer of hope for others, eager to revitalize the place.

A little lost…

In deserted alleys  where only the fishmonger, the pastry chef and the greengrocer held a stall, when the other businesses have left for almost a week, questions remain unanswered for the artisans and traders… Because at When it was time to dismantle their stand and face the void and dead loss of eight months without activity, they indicated that they had had no news from the future operator and had not signed no contract. A little lost…

"We are supposed to have priority but it’s to believe that they want to free us…", indicated one of them, busy dismantling his stand. Especially since a large banner, affixed to the front of the halls like on the City's advertising lollipops, has been launching a call for applications for several days…

Further, towards the Carniv'halles, the time was not for nostalgia but for celebration. The staff, very busy between a small white wine and a steak to serve, assured them: "It's like a Feria day. Customers are there! " To mark this date, and the start of the work, one of the waitresses had swapped her apron for a yellow vest and a construction helmet. To laugh rather than cry… like a large number of Biterrois, mostly regulars, came to mark this last and first day of la  new life of the halls.
