The vaccine is officially safe for 5 to 11 year olds, but Quebec will have work to do to convince all families.

Despite the reassuring data, parents remain worried and wonder; others are more optimistic.

“It's a good thing … My partner has a 10-year-old child and we are going to have him vaccinated,” said an Estrienne on Friday morning.

No less than 31,000 new youngsters in the Estrie region will eventually be able to be vaccinated, if the parents agree.

“It's a relief for us, we've been waiting for this news for a long time. . […] The important thing for us is that the children are healthy and on the school benches to promote learning, ”explained Richard Bergevin, president of the Estrie Teaching Union.

The government is clear: to hope for flexibility, this age group will have to be vaccinated at 80%.

This is an ambitious goal, but achievable. According to the latest data, 87% of Estriens have received a first dose and 85% are adequately vaccinated, while among 12-17 year olds, 83% have received a dose and 79.5% have double.

< p> “It is not the 31,000 children who will certainly be vaccinated, but our job will be to inform the parents”, explained the director of the vaccination campaign in Estrie, Jean Delisle.

Clinical trials of the vaccine show more than 90% efficacy in 5-11 year olds and no serious negative effects have been detected.
