Less than a week before the opening of the Olympic Games, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin sent a letter to police officials, but also gendarmes, firefighters, prefects… He calls for example and expresses his support.

"Finally !", it’s with this word that Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior of the resigning government, begins the letter, addressed this July 22 to the officials responsible for ensuring security during the Olympic Games.

"Your task will not be easy"

The minister, who remains in charge of current affairs until after the Olympic Games, recalls that "France will host the biggest world event this week that a country can organize".

Gérald Darmanin salutes four years of preparation which are now coming to fruition thanks to "your great availability and your deep dedication". Gérald Darmanin, who tells the police that "the eyes of the world will be on you" and that "your task will not be easy",then launches into an anaphoric succession of four sentences starting with "I'm counting on each of you".

He asks the police in particular to show the "most beautiful face of France : caring, friendly, professional" and ends his letter with the expression of "all our support and deep consideration.< /em>

Opening ceremony under heavy surveillance

For months, uncertainty hovered over the possibility of maintaining this scenography for logistical and security reasons.

"We made the choice to maintain the ceremony […] That, in itself, it’is already a tremendous victory", Emmanuel Macron told the press this Monday. " We are confident and we consider that we can hold it", he insisted. The president and the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin again provided a detailed update on the security situation on Monday with the Paris police prefect Laurent Nunez.

Risks, "there are always some, but see, we did in any case what was necessary upstream"  for the ceremony to take place, he noted, when asked about security fears.
