Canada will impose sanctions on “dozens” of individuals and organizations, “including Iran’s so-called morality police,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday before- noon.
Among the individuals targeted are “several members of the leadership of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard”, submitted Mr. Trudeau, on the sidelines of a press briefing on the hurricane < em>Fiona.
The Middle Eastern country has been rocked for a week by protests since the troubled death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested and jailed because she was not wearing the Islamic veil properly.
Federal Conservatives have been calling for years to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
M. Trudeau would not indicate whether this was part of his government's intentions.
He pointed out that Canada's sanctions regime against Iran is already one of the “strongest in the world”.
“Unfortunately, the disregard for human rights in Iran is not something new,” he said.
