Fernandez and Marino advance in Abu Dhabi

Quebec's Leylah Fernandez won her second-round qualifying match at the Abu Dhabi tournament in the United Arab Emirates on Monday and earned a spot in the main draw of the event.  

Fernandez, the second seed of the tournament's qualifying phase and 39th in the WTA rankings, disposed of the Ukrainian Katarina Zavatska, 289th in the world, in two sets of 6- 1 and 6-4. 

The game lasted 1 hour 25 minutes.

Fernandez slammed seven aces and committed five double faults. She has broken her rival's serve on four occasions.

In the first round of the main draw, Fernandez will face American Shelby Rogers, 46th in the world.

For her part, the Canada's Rebecca Marino, seeded sixth in qualifying, also earned a place in the main draw, beating Belgium's Ysaline Bonaventure, seeded 96 and eighth, 6-1, 6-4.

The encounter lasted 1h 4min as Marino hit 10 aces and double faulted. 

In the first round of the tournament, Marino will face Chinese Qinwen Zheng, 29th in the world.< /p>
