The number of new cases of COVID-19 declined in Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean, the region reporting 74 infections and seven more deaths on Tuesday.
“It is good news, the decrease in the number of cases, but the situation remains worrying”, specified the regional director of public health, Dr Donald Aubin.
The situation remains critical in hospitals as 61 people are hospitalized, including 10 in intensive care.
The authorities have no other choice but to offload other services to free up staff and assign them to the most critical sectors.
“Several surgeries and appointments have been canceled in recent days,” confirmed the director of professional services at the CIUSSS, the Dre Marlène Landry.
In Saguenay hospitals, only four out of 15 surgical rooms continue their activities for urgent cases.
As a result, specialists perform about 300 fewer surgeries per week. The network is already 4,500 operations behind schedule compared to last year and 2020 is not yet over.
Different plans are already being considered to assess how the delay can be resolved once the crisis is over.
While waiting for a return to normal, the virus continues to spread in health facilities in the region. Thus, the emergency at the Chicoutimi hospital was in turn hit by an outbreak.
The health authorities have nevertheless assured that the place remains safe for anyone whose state of health requires urgent care.
