The Poussan Carnival begins this Saturday, February 10 and ends on Wednesday 14. Detailed review of the appointments.
As early as September, the carnival committee met to prepare what constitutes the most important event of the year given its duration (five days ) and the number of people involved (children who dress up and participate in traditional dances, adults who make the floats, glue flowers, dress up, dance, elderly people who make flowers…).
The master of ceremonies inducted at the opening
Each year, the choice of master of ceremonies falls on a charismatic person involved in village life, who will gratify the carnival-goers with their verve and fantasy. He will be officially inducted on Saturday February 10 during the opening ceremony of the carnival, which will be followed by an aperitif offered by the municipality.
Sunday 11, from the morning, a squad of motorcycles and vintage cars will parade through the different districts of the city. From 2 p.m., magnificent cavalcade made up of several flower floats, dancing and jumping groups, peñas, the confetti cannon, Poussan's totem animal, the emblematic pink pig, and of course, to liven it all up, the master of ceremonies. Monday is devoted to costume balls at the Foyer des Campagnes, 6 p.m. for children, from 9 p.m. for adults.
Traditional dances for Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is the day of traditional dances with the famous Branle de la Chemise. At 6 p.m., the children dressed in jackets will parade from the town hall to the Foyer des Campagnes where drums and oboes will make them dance. Then, the Easel dance will be performed by children who have been rehearsing it for several weeks. After a meal from the bag for those who wish, an appointment is given to all adults wishing to participate in this « unique show in the world » and be able to say later « I was there! », at 9 p.m. in front of the market halls.
Each year the Chevalet dance is performed for the first time by the children.
After wandering through the medieval streets, the “wankers”, equipped with their candle, will meet at the Foyer des Campagnes to perform as best they can a few folk dances. Next will come the pretty Easel dance, this time performed by young adults and which enjoys resounding success every year.
The Paillasse judgment in conclusion
On Ash Wednesday, the last day of the carnival, the judging of Paillasse by the Le Strapontin theater company will take place at the Foyer des Campagnes at 7 p.m. A moment awaited and sometimes feared by the people of Poussan who hear good things! Will the unfortunate straw man be irremediably condemned and burned in the public garden?? A final aperitif, offered by the municipality, will close this 2024 edition.
The Queen and her dauphines, newly elected at the Sainte-Catherine fair, will be present during the five days of the carnival.
