Benfica Lisbon announced Tuesday evening that it had canceled the tickets sold to OM supporters for Thursday's Europa League quarter-final first leg match, saying it was reacting to a travel ban on its own supporters decided by the French authorities. .

"Benfica was this afternoon officially notified by the French authorities of the decision to ban the presence of Benfica supporters in Marseille for the return match of the quarter-finals of the Europa League", indicated the Portuguese club in a press release, while Marseille supporters have already been in Lisbon since Tuesday.

Benfica regrets late communication from the French authorities

After a new exchange with the Portuguese authorities concerning the presence of Marseille supporters in Lisbon, Benfica decided, "faced with this atmosphere of potential risk of ;insecurity", to cancel the tickets that had already been sold to them.

The Lisbon club therefore called on OM supporters not to travel to Portugal and asked its own fans not to travel to Marseille. Benfica "deeply regrets the decision of the French authorities, communicated only today, which calls into question the spirit of European competitions by depriving them of the presence of supporters, the ;rsquo;essence of football".

L’OM, for its part, wants to reassure

In a press release, OM explained for its part that it considers "that a favorable outcome is still possible" and "continues as has been the case for several days, to do everything possible in the interest of its supporters so that they attend at Thursday's meeting in Lisbon".

"L’OM will continue its efforts until it has won the case for its supporters whose behavior has been exemplary this season in the European Cup" adds the Marseille club.

On Sunday, the two clubs issued a joint press release to call on the authorities of their two countries to allow the travel of their respective supporters.
