French learners from Ifad presented their “fanzines”

The presentation of the exhibition "The fanzine factory" produced by French learners from the Ifad des APP workshops (continuing education center, avenue Denfert), co-hosted by literacy trainer Jérémie Gallegos and artist Tom Miquel Garcia, took place this Thursday, February 22. Learners, trainers and a few people were there to admire the creations, small handmade books, during plastic arts workshops allowing them to develop their learning of the French language.

The creation of small books

Roshin came from Syria alone a year ago on a boat. She was very scared, she confides. Having passed through Greece, she is now in Lodève. She is a seamstress and very proud to be a black belt in karate. Zikyuilah comes from Afghanistan where her parents still live. In Iran, he was a kung fu teacher. He learned the trade of electrician in France and would like to find work. A broad smile lights up his face when he speaks diligently in French. Miranda came from Georgia with her two sons, aged 13 and 11, who attend Dardé college. She is also learning French. A hairdresser for 10 years, she created a little book with the names of all the equipment relating to her profession.

"In learning to read, there is also immersion in the world of writing. This is ideal for showing what the book is about. Illustrated texts can encourage children to read books, indicates Jérémy Gallegos. "One morning a month, Tom Miquel Garcia, artistic animator, comes to the group and they create books together". Tom makes them with the means at hand. He refuses to make a distinction between professional and amateur: "Working in the workshops means telling yourself that we can produce things that we cannot find within the usual technical constraints, the standards. It is an activity where everything does not happen through words but through gestures and visuals. This changes the relationship with writing."

These workshops, which continue throughout the year, facilitate learning the French language while allowing exchanges and maintaining a fun aspect.

Tom Miquel Garcia led an introductory engraving workshop at the media library on the same day, split into two groups depending on the technique chosen: stamp on wood or on metal. Lisa, Leelou and Charlène, aged 12 to 15, came together to carry out the different stages until printing.
