From Bram to La Réole via Saint-Ouen: when “the left that works” wants to become “the left that governs” again

Raphaël Glucksmann and Carole Delga were gathered in Bram, in the Aude MAXPPP - REMY GABALDA

From Bram to La Réole via Saint-Ouen, « the non-Mélenchonist left » has multiplied the gatherings, around Carole Delga, Raphaël Glucksmann, and Karim Bouamrane.

"La gauche de gouvernement", "la gauche qui travaille", "la gauche non mélenchoniste", as its spearheads designate the tendency of the Socialist Party (and some of its allies) to which they belong, continues to rise from its ashes, still smoking since the score of 1.75% of the votes obtained by its candidate Anne Hidalgo in the first round of the 2022 presidential election.

By multiplying, at the beginning of this fall, the initiatives, the meetings and the creations or confirmations of movements by creating micro-parties, movements, within or in parallel with the PS.

Round tables, workshops, conferences

A left that came together, sharing round tables, workshops and conferences, in Bram in the Aude, on September 28, at the initiative of the president of the Occitanie Region Carole Delga (with François Holalnde and Bernard Cazeneuve as guest stars). Then, a few days later, on Thursday October 3, in Saint-Ouen, in Seine-Saint-Denis, at the invitation of the mayor, the now very media-friendly Karim Bouamrane, then, on Saturday October 5 and Sunday October 6, in La Réole, in Gironde, for the political return of Raphaël Glucksmann, the co-president of Place publique.

“Compromise does not mean compromise”

“During these meetings, with the entire diversity of the left, we showed that another alternative is possible”, summarized this Thursday Kamel Chibli, vice-president of the general council of Occitanie, very committed to this line: “We want to embody a left capable of assuming power with a beautiful project, a left that aspires to govern and work. And knowing that from our window, we will not impose everything on everyone. We have compromises to find because France is diverse. Which does not mean compromise, it is not the same, and that is what Jean-Luc Mélenchon does not understand. We want more social justice, more purchasing power, but without stigmatizing business and those who create wealth."

"The Mélenchonist left that creates noise and fury"

He adds: "And then in terms of form, we also want to show that the left is not just those who shout and oppose everything and everyone. We are not bogged down in this Mélenchonist left which creates noise and fury every day."
A Kamel Chibli also delighted, through these three meetings, to have been able “to show the diversity of the country, from Bram to Saint-Ouen We cannot always oppose the city and the suburbs to the countryside, the city dwellers to the rural. Another path is possible".

"If Macron dissolves in ten months, what do we do ?"

It remains to transform this voluntarism into facts, particularly within the PS where the supporters of this ideological position oppose, sometimes virulently, an Olivier Faure often accused of too much complacency with Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the LFI executives. Kamel Chibli assures : "We must hold a congress quickly, at the beginning of 2025, so as not to remain stuck on this alliance with the LFI executives. Of course, there are other priorities. But if Macron dissolves again in ten months, what do we do, what political line do we take ?"
