L'Assemblée nationale a rejeté sans surprise lundi 5 février la première motion de censure déposée par l'opposition de gauche contre le nouveau Premier ministre, Gabriel Attal.

Left-wing deputies criticized her for not having requested a vote of confidence, like her predecessor Elisabeth Borne, after her general policy speech last week.

If the vote of confidence is a tradition, it is not necessarily a constitutional obligation. In a situation of majority relative to the ;#39;National Assembly, the Prime Minister is freed from it, thus sparing himself from risking his future as head of government.

Far from counting

The text tabled by La France insoumise, the ecologists and the communists gathered 124 votes, while a majority of 289 votes is necessary to bring down the government.

"To free yourself from the vote of confidence is to choose to deviate from the fundamental principles of a parliamentary democracy. By this choice, Mr. Gabriel Attal prefers to govern solely by the prince and exempts himself from the political legitimacy necessary to claim to lead the policy of the Nation", denounced the four groups of the left in the text of their motion of censure.
