General Wayne Eyre becomes the Chief of Staff of the Canadian Armed Forces, a post he had already held on an interim basis since Admiral Art McDonald retired in February 2021 due to allegations of 'sexual misconduct.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed on Thursday that the senior officer will remain in charge of the Canadian military for good.
” Over the past year, thanks to his lived experience, he has been able to exercise strong leadership and help Canadians across the country meet important and increasingly difficult challenges, ”said the Prime Minister.
This news comes just a few weeks after the arrival of Anita Anand at the head of National Defense with the promise of bringing about a culture change within the Canadian Forces, plagued for years by many scandals assault.
“General Eyre will continue to work tirelessly to bring about cultural change. and within the Canadian Armed Forces, oversee the efforts made in this regard and gain the trust of survivors of sexual misconduct, ”Mr. Trudeau also underlined.
The new head of state- major is a veteran who has served in Afghanistan and the Balkans, among others. He also has experience with natural disasters, being responsible for the evacuation of Fort McMurray, Alta., When the city was ravaged by a forest fire in 2016.
