Grey's Anatomy season 19: Ellen Pompeo leaves (half) the series, Meredith absent from a large part of the episodes

By Aubéry Mallet Journalist Series, cinema, TV Aubéry Mallet is a journalist specializing in series. A fan of the small screen, she has seen everything (or almost) from Game of Thrones to Pretty Little Liars, from The Bridgerton Chronicle to Stranger Things via Gossip Girl or Friends. Wouldn't that feel the end of the side of Grey's Anatomy for its season 19? The broadcast date in the US is fixed: it is in October 2022 that the doctors of Gray Sloan Memorial will make their return… with a twist! Ellen Pompeo aka Meredith Gray will only appear in a handful of episodes. The actress decided to half leave the series for a new project. Soon the farewells?

19 years since Grey's Anatomyis on the air in the United States and the end of the medical series is not yet announced. But it is sure, we are closer to the conclusion than the beginnings and a recent announcement has enough to cast doubt on the future of the show produced by Shonda Rhimes. After the departures of Giacomo Gianniotti (Andrew DeLuca), Jesse Williams (Jackson Avery) or Richard Flood (Cormac Hayes), another departure – momentary this time – has been announced. But it is shocking.

Ellen Pompeo is leaving (half) Grey's Anatomy

Yes, the star of the series and main actress should take a little rest for season 19 of Grey's Anatomy. Ellen Pompeo is not leaving the medical series strictly speaking, but will make few appearances for this already highly anticipated sequel. The actress should only appear in 8 episodes out of about twenty, less than half. Yes, it's not much!

Limited appearances that will test the series' ability to survive without it. If the producers originally wanted to end Grey's in the event of the departure of Ellen Pompeo, this discourse has recently changed. “The series has inspired generations of medical professionals so I think for young people it's a good series and we'll try to keep it for them, not necessarily with me but continue after me “said the actress in May 2022.

A departure for another series

If Ellen Pompeo will be less present in the sequel to Grey's Anatomy is simply because the actress actually found a new role. She will be the producer and lead actress in a future series for Hulu (which is owned by Disney, which also owns ABC). We know that the project will be made up of 8 episodes and is inspired by a true story that made the buzz, that of a couple who adopts an 8-year-old girl whom they think has dwarfism but who discovers that the latter hid a lot of things from them. A project that will therefore allow her to finally explore another character after almost 20 years in the skin of Meredith.

To compensate for the departure of Ellen Pompeo, Grey's Anatomy has already announced the arrival of several actors who will play a new salvo of residents. Among them ? Teen Wolf star and Reign Adelaide Kane; former Glee and Shadowhunters actor Harry Shum Jr; Alexis Floyd seen in Inventing Anna but also Midori Francis (Dash & Lily) and Niko Terho. Will that be enough?

Season 19 of Grey's Anatomy premieres October 3, 2022 in the US.
