His arrest last December 15 caused a real shock wave in Rimouski and the National Assembly.

Harold LeBel faces a charge of sexual assault in connection with events that allegedly took place in 2017.

He is represented by Maxime Roy, lawyer for former Deputy Prime Minister Nathalie Normandeau.

His lawyer said this morning that his client would plead not guilty to the charge against him when he returned to court on February 16.

Mr. LeBel should also clarify at this time whether he will opt for a trial by judge alone or by judge and jury.

The two parties also informed the court that they were having discussions to relax the conditions that must be met by the member who remains at large since his arrest.

A publication ban protects the identity of the alleged victim.

Harold LeBel confirmed in a press release two days after his arrest in December that he would continue to serve as an MP. He said he wanted to show “that he has nothing to be ashamed of”.

Harold LeBel was excluded from the Parti Quebecois caucus hours after his arrest on December 15. He now sits as an independent member for Rimouski.
