On September 21, 2024, a 37-year-old man of Austrian origin self-amputated his penis with an axe after ingesting a high dose of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

This extreme case was published by the Mega Journal of Surgeryon September 21.

A 37-year-old Austrian man self-amputated his penis with a blunt axe after consuming a large amount of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

He had preserved his organ in a jar filled with dirty snow. About 5 hours after this horrible accident, he went to the nearest hospital in critical condition.

He doesn't remember anything

Doctors carefully cleaned the severed organ, which had been contaminated by dirt and snow, and managed to repair the extremity. Other pieces were too damaged to be reattached.

After the operation, the man was placed under the supervision of psychiatric professionals. He continued to suffer psychotic episodes for a week. Once recovered, he remembered nothing and continued his convalescence in the urology department.

Although complications arose, including necrosis, the man is now completely cured.

Klingsor syndrome

Magic mushrooms contain psilocybin, a natural psychedelic compound. While this active ingredient is increasingly used in medical research for its therapeutic benefits, particularly to treat depression, it is also very dangerous, as this story shows nightmarish.

This is the first reported case of psilocybin-induced self-amputation. Also known as Klingsor syndrome, the rare condition involves male genital self-mutilation following psychosis or hallucinations, as reported in the Open Journal of Urology.
