He never came back from his hike: a 60-year-old hiker is being actively sought after after he went missing in Crete

A search and rescue operation continues in Crete to find a 60-year-old man who went missing while hiking since Friday, September 27.

The sixty-year-old of German origin had set out on a hike with members of his family this Friday in the west of the island. But, probably having gone off on his own, he never returned from his walk.

A major search operation deployed

His relatives did indeed return to their starting point on Friday in the hope of finding him there, in vain. The man did not show up. His family then contacted the authorities to raise the alarm, the Greek news agency, Ana, reported.

Firefighters, police, a dog team, and drones were then deployed to the area where the hiker disappeared. Volunteers also went to the scene to try to find the sixty-year-old.

Unsuccessful searches

“The search continues but has so far been unsuccessful”, a head of the port police press office told AFP late this afternoon. The research focused on the coast and the mountainous region of Chania, in the west of the island,
