“I need to be supported by partners”: Béziers golfer Thomas Marty launches an appeal

Golfeur professionnel, Thomas Marty porte depuis plusieurs années un double projet : sa carrière au haut niveau et son envie de démocratiser la discipline. Entretien avec le sportif biterrois.

Comment se sont passées vos dernières échéances sur le circuit ?

I finished in tenth position in a big tournament in Catalonia at the end of last year. We were around forty players, some of whom play at the two best European levels. The playing conditions were really difficult with a lot of wind and a very fast green, so I'm happy with this result. It brings to fruition all the work that I have been putting in place for several years with my technical coach Frédéric Bergeron, but also that which I carry out on a physical and psychological level. I have worked a lot with a mental trainer recently and I feel today that these efforts are starting to bear fruit. It wasn't easy, I had to restructure a lot of things in my private and professional life, but this work helped me a lot. In particular, I learned to control my frustration or my euphoria on the course. Today, I play with much less emotion, which allows me to be focused on the environment and what I have to do to perform, depending on my current state.

What will be your ambitions for the next few months ?

The most important thing for me will be to play a full season. This is the priority if I want to continue to progress and develop my career. In particular, I will have a very big deadline in March, which could allow me to access many events on the circuit. Unfortunately, what I lack today to give me the maximum chance of succeeding is financial support. If I want to be able to invest 100% in my sport and be able to pay for all my travel, I need to be supported by partners. I know that the economic situation is difficult for everyone, I am an entrepreneur myself. But I tell myself that if several companies can give me a little nest egg, at least to help me start the season, there will be great things to write about in the coming months. It’s an adventure that I want to experience with those who accompany me, by offering them a partnership and a real joint project.

Like what you already offer as a golf coach.

Exactly. This is an activity that I carry out in addition to my career as a professional golfer at Golf Saint-Thomas. I give lessons when I'm not traveling or when the season is over. For me, transmission is something very important. I take great pleasure in sharing with fans all the experience I have acquired on the circuit, especially since it also allows me to learn more about myself and my game. And then, it also gives me the opportunity to open golf to as many people as possible. It’s a magnificent sport, but which unfortunately has a false image. We sometimes think that it is an inaccessible discipline and only reserved for a certain audience, and yet the reality is very different. This is also what I want to show, whether to individuals or companies who would like to accompany me on this adventure.
