Mobile 5G network has not had time to turn at full capacity, as the company is already preparing to introduce networking of the sixth generation – 6G. In Germany, a group of experts from the leading German institutions presented the project of mobile networks of new generation. However, shows were not the entire network, but only the project electro-optical modulator for mobile infrastructure 6G, which, according to Huawei, will be deployed in 2030.

Networks 6G is a serious disadvantage, because for their stable performance will require a more dense placement of the repeaters if you use the standard means of communication. In the end this placement will greatly increase the load on the cable infrastructure to connect base stations and antennas with fiber optic cables, which will increase their cost.
Researchers from the Institute of Photonics and quantum electronics KIT (IPQ) and Institute of microstructure technology (IMT), Institute for radio frequency engineering and electronics (IHE) and the Fraunhofer Institute of applied solid state physics (IAF) published in the journal Nature Photonics article, which reported on the development of electron-optical modulator for direct connection of the antenna to the fiber optic cables.

The data transfer speed in the experience of up to 50 Gbit/s. the Width of the bandwidth of the modulator is equal to 0.36 THz. This technology opens the door to data transmission speeds over a single optical lines of up to hundreds Gbytes/s. In the next step, scientists will try to simplify the design of the modulator and its associated structures to bring development to the stage of a commercial project. This is a good start for the development of wireless networks of the future.
