Radioactive chemical element California not found in nature: it was artificially obtained in 1950 from the University of California at Berkeley. Known 20 CA isotopes, the most stable of which is CA-251 with a half-life of 898 years, and the most popular – California-252 (more “robust” – 2645).

“Fifty-second” is a powerful source of neutrons, so it has found application in the nuclear industry (as a “starter” for nuclear reactors), medicine (radiation therapy), geological exploration (as an element sensitive sensors). And California-252 is remarkable because it is the most expensive metal on Earth: the price of 1 gram of isotope is about 250 million U.S. dollars. Why? It is not in nature, and to synthesize it in the lab, you need special equipment, knowledge and 7 years.

Not surprisingly, it is produced only in two places on the planet: oak ridge national laboratory in the United States and the State scientific center of the Russian Federation RIAR (Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region). Recently, Russian scientists have found a way to greatly reduce the production cycle of an expensive metal.

In the final stages of production of californium-252 is formed another chemical element, Berkley-249, though its value is low, and practical application is limited. Element long accumulated as waste products, while experts RIAR decided to irradiate it in high flow. After a series of trials and errors, scientists have achieved the desired result, and now full-cycle production of californium-252 on the basis of the Russian scientific centre is only a few months.
