The most popular “works” are called giant heart and the names are sometimes visible in the photos of Google Maps. Local authorities have supported environmentalists and imposed hefty fines for the drawings in the sand. Violators face a fine of 600 euros, and in some cases imprisonment.

The sand dunes of Gran Canaria are part of a nature reserve and is considered an important ecosystem of the archipelago. Environmentalists say: if you do not take action, the natural beauty of these places could be lost forever.

The local government plans to soon launch in Gran Canaria a special campaign, which will inform tourists about how important sand dunes.
