The Mediterranean Flavor Days, organized by the Agglo Nîmes Métropole, will take place from Friday May 31 to Sunday June 2. The opportunity for Gard farmers to show city dwellers the richness of the land.

In the midst of an agricultural crisis, the Mediterranean Flavor Days, organized by Nîmes Métropole at the Jardins de la Fontaine from Friday May 31 to Sunday June 2, offer an enchanted interlude.

An agricultural show with Gard sauce "to show the riches of our territory, the only event of its kind in the open air and in the center- city", says the president of the Agglo Franck Proust. Breeders will thus be able to come with their animals to the Gardens, in a less central location than the Esplanade and Feuchères but easier to secure.

Share the passion

A real boon for farmers who will be able, from Friday May 31, to share their passion with 1,200 schoolchildren. For the JM"S, Claude Méjean, cattle breeder based in Saint-Félix-de-Pallières, winner of the excellence prize at the Nîmes competition last March, plans to come with Salers and Charolais breeds. Other colleagues, whether from Gardonnenque or east of Nîmes, have chosen for their part to exhibit Gascony, Aubrac and Limousin cattle.

We already have to collect the animals almost everywhere in the Gard, in lower Lozère", explains Claude Méjean who, like the other breeders, will have hay provided by the organizers and the ;water. "It’is a plus for Gard breeding, showing what we know how to do, explaining our profession, how hard it is with climatic hazards, the ;rsquo;inflation", indicates the Cévenol who became a breeder in 1999 in Saint-Félix-de-Pallières, himself the former timber merchant.

More than 60 sheep in the Gardens

He does not regret his choice and is enthusiastic about the idea of seeing the Longhorns raised by a sister in Aimargues again on the JM’S. The breeder is counting on the support of the population who will have a great opportunity to show their attachment to the agricultural world, to these enthusiasts like Dimitri Servière.

The sheep breeder, based at the Domaine de Vallongue in Nîmes Métropole, and whose lease has been renewed for three years, announces for these JM’S around sixty sheep of raïole breed, those that they breed, but also reds from Roussillon and merinos from Arles brought by other colleagues.

Don't be forgotten

This meeting, the Nîmes shepherd is very keen on it:"We must not let ourselves be forgotten, especially with the crisis we have been through. We still have so much paperwork, problems with the wolf. For sheep breeding, we have not seen any progress. It’s a passion job that must be made profitable. This is why organizing the JM’S in the center of Nîmes is a superb idea because it can encourage city dwellers to eat locally. We show them that we are capable of supplying the entire department."

To further attract the public, the sheep breeder will give a shearing demonstration on Friday in front of the schools but also on Saturday June 1st in the evening. He also prepared himself for the JM’S in terms of health, for the identification of animals, the equipment and is preparing to monitor his sheep night and day.
