Dalmatian Pelican (lat. Pelecanus crispus) – rare species from the family of pelicans. Even by the mid-nineteenth century the number of these birds has reached one million, but today their number does not exceed several thousand. The Dalmatian Pelican is listed in the IUCN Red list (category “vulnerable”) and in the Red book of Russia. The main reason for population declines is destruction of their natural habitat and grasslands, the pollution of waters by industrial wastes and petroleum products.
This bird is larger than the pink Pelican. It also differs from it by the lack of pink tones in the plumage. Downy chick is quite plain: its color is bright, the bill is dark. In adults grow beautiful bright white feathers, including elongated and twisted “curly” similar to mane. The throat pouch and the surrounding naked parts become yellow, and the beak is red-orange tones. Juveniles are put in adult plumage in the third year of life.
Moscow zoo participates in the European program for the conservation of Dalmatian pelicans. First they brought the offspring in 2012, then a few years later, and now the number of these rare inhabitants of the zoo has replenished with two Chicks. The first hatched on 5 April and the second on April 10. Both kids are healthy, and this is a great success: until they grow older, they face many problems.
As soon as the pelicans lay their eggs, they must be transferred to an incubator. It is a common practice: in captivity the possibility that they can be crushed, is very high. When frightened, it can provoke even loud noises on the street, heavy birds leave the nest, unaware of what lies underfoot.
Threat are and the first days after hatching: in nature, the eldest chick often pushes the younger out of the nest to avoid competition for food brought by parents. However, in the zoo have pelicans there is no lack of feed, so the problems most likely will not. The first food babies – heated fish meat with enzymes, rubbed to a paste. Gradually the diet is supplemented with pieces of fish and bones.
Despite the small difference in age, newborns are very different from each other: Junior senior are much larger, its weight is about 1 kg, and the body covered with down, while the younger chick weighs no more than 500g and just started to opasatsya. However, just after a month the Chicks will weigh 6 times more, reached the same size with their parents and are ready to leave the nest.
The appearance of the Dalmatian Pelican Chicks – a joyful and important event: everyone has a special value for the formation of a stable genetically diverse population in captivity. In the future it is planned to send grown-up pelicans in the leading zoos in the world, where they can procreate.
