Previously, scientists had known about the 15 thousands

Data on new viruses entered the expedition Tara Oceans. For analysis were taken several thousand water samples from different areas of the World oceans. Special emphasis was made on the waters of the Arctic ocean.
The study sample was engaged in terrestrial laboratories, in particular, the European laboratory of molecular biology. The result was discovered 195 728 previously unknown viral populations.
Based on these results an assumption was made that the oceans can be divided into five zones (including two remote Arctic region). Each of them has its own laws that live viruses of a specific area. On this basis, the scientists faced a new global challenge is to understand how it works these patterns, and use this knowledge to further human attempts to delve into the ecosystem of the oceans.
