In the late spring of 1995, a young canadian 21-year-old from Ottawa is now shaking the planet rock with You Oughta Know and the album Jagged Little Pill. An album that was 25 years ago and which has sold 33 million copies.
After two albums-flavored pop and dance, Alanis Morissette struck a huge blow in this era dominated by the grunge of Seattle and alternative music. Jagged Little Pill won four Grammy awards, including album of the year, and launched a world tour that lasted 18 months. A musical was even created around this album.
Alanis Nadine Morissette became, at age 21, the youngest artist to put the hand on the precious statuette. It was then edged out by Taylor Swift, in 2010, decorated in 20 years, for the album Fearless, and then by Billie Eilish, the top of its 18 years, with When We All Fall Asleep, Where do We Go? in the year 2020.
Without a record contract after having launched Alanis and Now is the Time in Canada she completed her secondary education and left Ottawa to live in Toronto.
A meeting with producer Glen Ballard in Los Angeles, will change his destiny. Ballard has worked on the albums Bad and Dangerous from Michael Jackson, with Paula Abdul and the Pointer Sisters.
The connection is strong and installs quickly. The lightning professional, and music is powerful.
Flea and Dave Navarro
The Bottom Line, the first piece that resulted from this collaboration, is not found among the 12 songs of this album for 57 minutes and on which there is a song hidden.
Written in an hour, The Bottom Line has been added in the edition of 20th anniversary of Jagged Little Pill launched in 2015.
The song Perfect, written in 20 minutes, with Ballard on guitar, and Morissette, who would improvise lyrics, was the trigger. The label Maverick, founded by Madonna, has been the only one to show interest in the new material from this young Canadian, after having heard You Oughta Know, Perfect and Hand in My Pocket.
Launched on 13 June 1995, Jagged Little Pill began her climb to the top of the charts, when the radio station KROQ, Los Angeles, began to play the single You Oughta Know on which one finds Flea and Dave Navarro of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on bass and guitar.
The album was first on the charts in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Scotland, the United States, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, the netherlands, Portugal, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Five other singles were extracted from this album, with the pieces Hand in My Pocket, Ironic, You Learn, Head Over Feet and All I Really Want.
Alanis Morissette had to go on a tour of 31 shows in June, with Liz Phair and training Garbage, to highlight the 25 years of Jagged Little Pill. Concerts had been scheduled at the RBC Ottawa Bluesfest and Quebec city summer Festival.
Cancelled due to the COVID-19, this tour should take off on 23 September at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark. It will occur on July 11, 2021 at the RBC Ottawa Bluesfest and still nothing has been announced regarding the next edition of the Festival d’été de Québec.
