The leadership of the Japanese city of Sapporo (the Northern Prefecture of Hokkaido) was announced by the international Olympic Committee (IOC) on the withdrawal of the bid to host the winter Games in 2026.

The statement noted that Sapporo aims to host the winter Olympics in 2030.
In 1972 winter Olympics are held in Sapporo. National Olympic Committee of Japan did not want to so early out of the fight for the right to host the Games. In the opinion of the Committee, it will negatively affect the chances of the application to host the Olympics in 2030.
It was planned that the decision to cancel will be made after discussions scheduled for fall. But the earthquake that occurred in Hokkaido in early September, has changed the plans of the city authorities.
In April, the IOC has published a list of seven national Olympic committees (NOC), which formally confirmed their intention to adopt in his country’s winter Olympics and Paralympics in 2026
Previously, their applications have been withdrawn Sion and Graz.
So, for holding the Olympics in 2026 competing calgary (Canada), Stockholm (Sweden), Erzurum (Turkey) and Italy (Cortina d’ampezzo, Milan or Turin).
The city, which will host the winter Olympics and Paralympics in 2026, will be elected at the IOC session in September 2019.
