Jean-Sébastien Girard: Mr. Nostalgia

Jean-Sébastien Girard: Monsieur Nostalgie

Anyone who listens to The Evening is (still) young knows Jean-Sébastien Girard and above all, his deep attachment to the works of the past. His repeated references to Cormorant, Earth, human and company bear witness to this. Attached to the phone, our speaker insists : “Despite my label of nostalgic, I’m very much in phase with my time. “Interview with Jean-Sébastien Girard, which will resume in June on the orders of JS Tenderness, his show of oldies FM in the last 40 years on HERE Music, in addition to animate on Facebook a quiz theme… (you guessed it) nostalgia.

Are you the style to say “It was better before” ?

No. Except, perhaps, in music. I do not think that it was of the best films and best tv shows before. I love the tv that it is done. Contrary to what people may think, I’m not all the time, listening to the old salt-and-Pepper , and old Me and the other. I listen to pretty much everything that is done. I have Netflix. I love the social networks. I am up to date.

How would you describe your nostalgia ?

My nostalgia, to me, is to have a tender gaze on the past. I like it find an old catalog for Distribution to consumers. I am part of groups in Facebook with old photos, excerpts from previous issues… I like to watch old tv series with sets in a carton. It’s fun for me to see how things have evolved.

When have you discovered that you were particularly attached to the past ?

As well, business when I started doing The Evening is still young. At the beginning, Fred Savard was like me. We had the same references. We had a lot of fun to send the ball in on a meeting with our old stories. We could spend evenings watching old stuff. We listened to the old Bye, old Ding and Dong.

What do you think of the concept of guilty pleasure ?

I hate that. It is so much a posture snobinarde. I don’t like people who say : “I love it, listen to Marie Carmen, but I’m embarrassed to like it. “I’m like :” Say nothing, then. “Me, I like it, Marie Carmen. I assume it totally.

Many people take advantage of the confinement to listen to safe values. In psychology, we speak of ” healthy regression “. Is this the case ?

Yes. In the month of march, it was completely in front of the unknown. It was so new. The old shows, it is something that we knew. This is not true as I just listen to the Cormorant, but at the beginning of the confinement, when I spent my day watching RDI and that everyone died, a Cormorant, before I go to bed, it was good. I knew what to expect. I knew what was coming. And while the pace of the old tv… there was a scene that fascinates me in human Ground. The madam takes his coffee. It sounds at the door. She gets up. It will open up. It is the gatekeeper. She receives a box. But what is there may well be in there ? She is going to wear the box in the kitchen. She takes a pair of scissors. She opens the box. And while it comes out the trick, the phone rings and she learns of a tragedy. The scene lasted three minutes, but we never knew what was in the box. This is fascinating !

You are going to conduct a quiz on Facebook on Tuesday. Are you a fan of trivia games ?

Yes. My dream would be to animate a quiz. When I was little, I have done a lot. My mother was involved to Make me a drawing, Action, reaction… When I was 20 years old, we went to the Essential to TQS. This is Gino Chouinard, who motivated it.

Are you surprised at the success of your radio show, JS Tenderness ?

For real, the reactions in the last year I have really, really surprised. Especially those who were younger. Young people love these songs. And it didn’t seem to be so ironic. I am aware that they are far from perfect. They have their faults. This is not Beethoven. But they are effective. If we remember that 20, 30, 40 years later, is that they have something.
