Impossible to miss the Joker in this Wednesday 9 October. The sworn enemy of Batman is everywhere. For cause, he now has the benefit of an origin story with Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role. But Joker is not a film for children. Sick, violent, dizzying, this new production DC is the opposite of Aquaman, Wonder Woman and co. Here is our critique. Without spoilers.
Gotham City, early 80’s. The city is dirty, corrupt. Life is hard for ordinary people while the billionaires strut their stuff in the highest spheres. Among them, Thomas Wayne, father of Bruce Wayne. Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix ) is a clown and missed. Dreaming of becoming a comedian stand-up, he struggles to find his place in the world. Arthur is part of the outcasts, the rejected, the despised. Pushed to the end, bruised, it will gradually plunge into madness and become the Joker.
A Joker that has nothing to do with the Suicide Squad
Writing his own origin story for the character, Todd Phillips offers a 180-degree turn, away from the rest of his filmography (the saga Very Bad Trip among other things). Joker is the movie related to super heroes that we didn’t dare to hope. Especially the part of DC. Fans ofAquaman, the Wonder Woman or even Shazam! and Suicide Squad are likely to be disappointed. Or even baffled. This Joker has nothing to do with the rest of the DCEU. Hence the insistence of Todd Phillips to explain that this is not a film of the DCEU. This Joker is in a different reality than the one of Jared Leto in the face of Margot Robbie.
Joaquin Phoenix is the Joker.
A Joaquin Phoenix-haunted and crazy
Accept the role of the Joker after Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson and Jared Leto, is not available to all. Hard not to be immediately compared to the other actors who have embodied the enemy n°1 of Gotham. This was without counting on the capabilities of an actor of the stature of Joaquin Phoenix. The u.s. does more than embody the Joker. He dwells in it, the reinvents. His performance is haunted at this point. It radiates so much the film that he even ended up surpass. Impossible to get out of the projection of the Joker without his smile to the spirit, and without that resonates with his maniacal laughter.
There will be a before and an after Joker
In these times of sequel, reboot, remake, spin-off, it is almost miraculous that a studio like DC/Warner has agreed to finance an adult movie and ill dedicated to the great enemy of Batman. Todd Phillips reinvents the legend of the Joker, and delivers a film under tension, built as a true descent into hell reminiscent of the mythical Taxi Driver with Martin Scorsese. Bold and sublime.
Joaquin Phoenix is the Joker.
A Joker 2 is it possible ?
A sequel is possible ? Seen the end (which we do spoilera not, don’t panic !), we will say that yes. But Todd Phillips has said that his history was on a single film and that no # 2 was thinking (and certainly no encounter with the Batman Robert Pattinson). However, Joaquin Phoenix likes to confide in an interview that there are many openings for a possible sequel. “This role became the role of dream, “said Phoenix in Rolling Stone magazine. “This is not something that I thought about before working on this film… Todd and I have been discussing this that it would be possible to do with the Joker… If we could, we would have already started to turn...”. So watch out. In the meantime, enjoy this Joker.
