In thirty years, Villeneuve beach will be submerged

#HERAULT –The Regional Chamber of Auditors has just made public its report, which essentially concerns the protection of the coastline, relating to the Montpellier Metropolis and the commune of Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone. The conclusions are alarming: if erosion continues at this speed, the sea will completely cover Villeneuve beach and could also flood Lattes, Pérols and Montpellier airport. According to the chamber, the Villeneuve-Le Prévost sector is the one which has suffered the most decline in Occitanie: nearly 12 meters between 2009 and 2018 and nearly 150 meters between 1895 and 2009. In the event of elevation to a meter, Maguelone Cathedral would become an island. Human activity and development projects, notably Ode to the Sea, are therefore closely studied in these sectors.
