A 22-year-old influencer has been banned from the Chinese social network TikTok for her unhealthy posts about food, which could encourage eating disorders.
She was followed by more than 670,000 subscribers. Liv Schmidt, a young 22-year-old American influencer, had her account deleted from TikTok. The woman who claimed that “it's not a sin to want to be thin” was pinned for her content, which could encourage eating disorders.
Through thematic videos about what she eats during the day, “what I eat in a day”, she encouraged a reduction in food consumption. These videos, very widespread on the social networks Instagram and Tiktok, are most of the time intended to make people feel less guilty about eating.
Promotion of dangerous behavior
The New York Times, in an article spotted by Slate, explains that many critics of the influencer's content indicated that it was reminiscent of “pro-ana” content a popular trend in the late 1990s that promoted thinness as a body shape goal.
According to Liv Schmidt, society has treated her better since she became thinner. In a Wall Street Journal article cited by the New York Times, the influencer denies suffering from any eating disorder. However, it is the argument that it promotes dangerous weight loss behaviors that justifies the deletion of her account according to TikTok.
However, Liv Schmidt's YouTube and Instagram accounts are still accessible, and Slate assures that the young woman has already joined TikTok under a new pseudonym.
