This Wednesday, October 17, in its 10 a.m. bulletin, Météo France placed Ardèche and Haute-Loire on red alert for floods and rain-floods. Many departments are also on orange alert. We take stock in real time.  

The essentials: 

Ardèche and Haute-Loire have been placed on red alert by Météo France in its 10 a.m. bulletin. Nineteen departments are on orange alert for a risk of storms, rain-flooding or flooding. These are the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Hautes-Pyrénées, Haute-Garonne, Ariège, Aude, Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne, Hérault, Aveyron, Lot, Dordogne, Corrèze, Lozère, Gard, Loire, Rhône, Var, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Alpes-Maritimes. In the south of Occitanie, brief but violent storms are forecast for the afternoon. Heavy flooding is possible on several Cévennes rivers. 11:33 a.m.

Annonay evacuates the city center and closes schools

The City of Annonay is launching its Municipal Safeguard Plan this Thursday morning due to the heavy rains that are hitting the Ardèche. All schools and daycare centers are being evacuated. School and urban transportation are being stopped. The Saint Exupéry library, the theater, and the Maison de la Musique will be closed. It is forbidden to recover vehicles from basements, reports France Bleu Drôme Ardèche .

The Gier placed on red alert

According to the Prefect of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Rhône regions, the Gier, a river in the Rhône, is on red flood alert. The population is asked to respect the security perimeters and not to approach the surroundings. Rail traffic is interrupted between Lyon and Saint-Etienne. The A47 motorway is currently closed.

The south of the Rhône has been badly affected by floods since last night, particularly in the Givors area near the A47.

Heavy rains in Lozère

In Villefort, in Lozère, the water keeps rising. “The streams have become torrents,” explains the mayor. Municipal employees, firefighters, elected officials are on deck, on alert and in permanent contact with the prefecture. ” It's been a long time since we've experienced a phenomenon of this intensity, perhaps since 1999“, Bruno Bié says.

It's difficult at the moment to estimate the damage that this meteorological episode will cause. For the time being, we know that roads and ditches are damaged, and that retaining walls have collapsed. Cellars and premises have been flooded. A first home invaded by water has just been reported by a resident, in the middle of morning.

In the Gard, school transport is suspended this Thursday in the municipalities of the Aigoual, Viganais, Piémont, Uzège, Gard rhodanien, Cèze Cévennes Nord, Alésien sector, Gardonnenque and Cévennes Sud sectors. Several roads have been closed. The full report here.
