President Hassan Rohani said on Saturday that up to 35 million Iranians additional risk of contracting the novel coronavirus, since the country still does not have herd immunity.
While the number of cases officially registered in Iran amounted to 271 606, Mr. Rohani stated that 25 million of the population (approximately 81 million people) could, however, have been infected since the first cases were reported in February.
“We have not yet reached the point of herd immunity,” said Mr. Rohani, in a meeting televised by the national Committee for the fight against the pandemic, adding that “25 million Iranians could be infected by the disease,” according to a report by the research department of the ministry of Health.
A press secretary of the president said on Twitter a few hours later that “the $ 25 million” referred to ” those who have contracted the virus and have obtained an immunity “.
“We have to assume that 30 to 35 million more are at risk to contamination,” added Mr. Rohani and the country should prepare to see the number of hospitalizations doubled compared to last five months, according to the report.
Mr. Rohani is the first senior iranian seeming to indicate that the country has on the immunity herd to eradicate the virus.
