Ce jeudi 29 août au parc Hugo, le maire Pierre Soujol a présidé le 80e anniversaire de la libération de la ville.

80 years ago, on Tuesday, August 29, 1944, the detachment of the French Army of Africa led by Colonel Simon entered the city via the Pont de Vesse, thus liberating the Lunellois from the German occupier. A historic day and an anniversary that the City accompanied with a memorial cycle which, as Mayor Pierre Soujol recalled in his speech,

A topical speech nourished by the past

A speech during which the elected official drew heavily on this legacy of the past to convey several messages. « Despite the injuries and the grief experienced, we perceive the resilience and the infinite happiness of regained freedom. One of the mottos of our armies takes on its full meaning “Who dares wins”, he notably launched.
In the same way, evoking “ the values ​​that surpass us, those of free spirits, marked by convictions, audacity and determination”, he insisted: “We are all the guardians of these values. Everyone must be ready to oppose our republican forces to the brutality of devastating ideologies. »

Reference to the La Grande-Motte attack

Also speaking of the fight against hatred led by our elders, he continued: « This fight is still relevant », making particular reference to the recent attack on the synagogue in La Grande-Motte and castigating, in passing, « the inconsequential remarks that can be made and serve extremists ready to do anything. » Pierre Soujol ended his speech by calling on everyone to « never forget this past » and recalling that the memorial cycle opened in the fall would culminate on Sunday with the Freedom Festival. « As we march on Sunday, we will think of our veterans, those thanks to whom we are still French and free today », he concluded.
The ceremony was also marked by several wreath-layings, Le Chant des partisans and a magnificent a capella rendition of La Marseillaise by the young talent from Lunel, Camille Vignal.
