Mazan rape case: the unwavering support of the wives of the accused who assure that their husbands were “manipulated”
|Several women, whether they are partners, mothers or sisters of the accused in the Mazan rape trial, have chosen to support their men.
There are 50 men on trial alongside Dominique Pelicot for three weeks now. Among these 50 men, several have been supported since the beginning of the case by their partners, some of whom have come to testify in court.
One of them explains to the microphone of BFMTV that her husband was "manipulated" by Dominique Pélicot. “Why not believe him, why believe everyone and not him ? We believe his version, because we know he's not a rapist, we have no doubts”, she laments to our colleagues. “We think about it all the time… It's hard, but we won't let him go, we're convinced, we're sure he's not a rapist. Otherwise we wouldn't be here. “We don't defend the indefensible,” adds his daughter.
“He didn't mean to do that to her”
For this family, the world came crashing down,“one morning in February 2021. Notified two hours after her husband's arrest, she still remembers: “They told me my partner was accused of rape. I understood theft. I said, “No, that's not possible, you've got the wrong person”. They showed me pictures of my husband, I recognized him right away.”
Her daughter continues: “The first thing we wanted to do was see Dad. He said, “Don't leave me, stay with me.” She told him that wasn't the most important thing, that the most important thing was to get him out of prison.” Two weeks after his incarceration, the accused attempted suicide. For his daughter, this gesture was “because of the guilt towards Gisèle Pelicot, he didn't want to do that to her. We tried to understand how our father had gotten to this point."
"He was trapped"
"We were also looked at askance. Many people asked me why I didn't throw him out. But no, I didn't want him to end up on the street, with nothing left. He didn't deserve this”, concludes the mother. For another partner of the accused, the support will be unconditional. "No matter the sentence, he's our father, we need him", she whispers, still in the columns of BFMTV.
"My clients' wives tell me 'he's a good man, we've been together for years, we had children but there was this huge jerk (Dominique Pelicot)'. There is anger towards him.", completes the lawyer of two accused. "The wife of one of my clients always knew that it was not rape. She manages to understand that he was set up,", defends another lawyer.
