Méchants Raisins: The 5 Best Wines Under $15

Méchants Raisins: The 5 Best Wines Under $15< /p> UPDATE DAY

With inflation that doesn't take the time to stop at 5 p.m. to have an aperitif with friends, prices continue to climb. And that of wines is no exception.

Although our monopoly is entitled to two price adjustments per year, last Sunday we were entitled to the third increase this year. Aside from inflation, the SAQ cited various factors to justify these adjustments, including the shortage of labour, the rise in the price of raw materials such as glass, and the disruption of supply chains. In addition, 1458 products are experiencing a price increase, while 539 products are experiencing a price drop. The SAQ estimates the average increase at 2.4% and the average decrease at 1.3%. For the consumer, this unfortunately means fewer choices for low-priced wines. There are barely forty wines at less than $10 compared to more than sixty last year. For wines under $15, there is a decline of nearly 140 products with a choice that is now around 500 different wines. To help you, we have selected for you the five best wines under $15 currently available at the SAQ.

Drink less. Drink better.

Adega de Penalva 2021, Dão

★★1⁄2 | $ | $12.45 | Portugal 12.5%

Still just as convincing, this white produced by the dynamic cooperative Adega de Penalva! Made with the Encruzado, Cercial and Malvasia Fina grape varieties, it is fragrant to perfection with notes of lime, lily, nectarine and muscat. The wine is quite ample with a crunchy fruitiness with an exotic profile. The slight bitterness on the finish brings personality to the whole, which remains very dry. Perfect as an aperitif, with Asian cuisine or cheeses.

Vivanco, La Maldita 2021, Rioja

★★1⁄2 | $ | $14.45 | Spain 13.5%

La Rioja at a low price, it's here! A 100% Grenache from an 80-hectare vineyard at an altitude of over 700 meters, which allows you to enjoy the freshness despite the high temperatures in the region. A third of the wine is aged in French and American oak barrels for three months, while the rest is aged on the lees in stainless steel vats. A charming nose focused on black fruits, liquorice and a touch of sweet spices. On the palate, the material is generous and revolves around rounded tannins, which gives a slight velvety impression. The perfect companion for burgers on the BBQ.

Brumont, La Gascogne 2021, IGP Côtes de Gascony

★★1⁄2 | $ | $14.50 | France 12.5%

It’s a classic and a regular on our old Top 75 Wines Under $15 charts. The friendly Alain Brumont offers us here a blend dominated by Colombard and completed by Sauvignon Blanc. Lovely tones on the nose of lime, nectarine and citrus. Ample, it displays about 4 g of residual sugar, but the raised acidity balances everything wonderfully and leaves the impression of a perfectly dry wine. Very drinkable, it offers a finish reminiscent of papaya. Perfect with salads or sushi.

Vignoble de Lorgeril, L'Orangeraie cabernet-sauvignon 2020, IGP Pays d'Oc

★★ | $ | $14.95 | France 13.5%

Another classic in the range of low-cost reds whose quality is surprisingly consistent. Cabernet Sauvignon presents itself here with aplomb. To our delight, the wine seems focused on fruit rather than barrel aging. Notes of ripe blackcurrant, raspberry and thyme. It is generous with supple tannins, freshness and an undeniable hold. Difficult to find better under $15. Cheer ! Think osso buco or beef tab and fries.

Bodegas Juan Gil, Pasico 2020, Jumilia

★★1⁄2 | $ | $13.20 | Spain 13.5%

The Jumilla region straddles the provinces of Murcia and Albecete, in southeastern Spain. This is the kingdom of Monastrell, a grape variety that is genetically close to the Mourvèdre found in France. Assembled with Shiraz, it gives here a wine overflowing with black fruits, pepper and cloves. It is fleshy, with ripe fruit, well-present tannins and a bitterness that brings a pleasant feeling of freshness. Fairly oaky with hints of liquorice on the finish. Go with stews or braised meats.
