Favorites to win the Memorial Cup before the start of competition, the Seattle Thunderbirds opened their tournament with a victory on Saturday, but the Peterborough Petes did not give them a present.

Peterborough took a 2-1 lead in the second period before the Thunderbirds exploded with three unanswered goals en route to their first win of the competition, 6-3.< /p>

The Petes closed the gap on the power play in the third, but weren't able to get the tying goal. Jordan Gustafson closed the books with a knockout goal with just over three minutes left in the game.

J.R. Avon, Owen Beck and Avery Hayes scored for the Petes, while Lucas Ciona, Kyle Crnkovic (3), Nolan Allan and Gustafson scored the winners. Thanks to his hat trick, Crnkovic was named player of the match.

For fans of the CH, know that the other hope of the he team besides Beck, Jared Davidson, got an assist for the Thunderbirds.

Thunderbirds will now have a day off before to face the Quebec Remparts on Monday night. As for the Petes, they will meet the Kamloops Blazers on Sunday night. Both teams have each lost their first match of the competition.
