MLS: Galaxy breached salary cap

Major League Soccer (MLS) revealed on Friday that the Los Angeles Galaxy disobeyed league budget rules in 2019. 

In a statement, the Garber Circuit explained that forward Cristian Pavon's salary had not been properly disclosed. He had fallen into the category of athletes acquired via a targeted allocation amount, when he should have been a designated player. 

The MLS thus imposed a fine of $1 million on the club and also a loss of the same order in general allocation amount. The Galaxy will also not be able to recruit a player in need of an international transfer certificate, who therefore plays outside of the United States or Canada, during the second transfer window of 2023 (July to August).

The team's president, Chris Klein, has meanwhile been suspended from his sporting responsibilities until the beginning of May, ie until the conclusion of the first transfer window. Head Coach Greg Vanney will assume his role as Sporting Director for the first half of 2023.

Pavon played with the Galaxy in 2019 and 2020. He played 33 games in MLS, scoring 13 goals and 15 assists. His loan from Argentinian club Boca Juniors expired on December 31, 2020.
