The human need for meat has reached staggering proportions, an increase of about 500 percent since 1961.
The staff of Oregon state University have analyzed 300 species of megafauna (the sum of the animal species whose body mass exceeds 40-45 pounds), selecting those species which were significantly more than their “relatives”. It turned out that 70 percent of the populations of these species are experiencing decline, and a whopping 59 percent and all are endangered.
Of course, people are always influenced large populations of animals. As our ability to hunt with time was improved, we hunted large herbivores, the lack of which is reflected in large predators feeding on the same prey. Only in the last 500 years died two percent of all megafauna is much more than the total number of extinct vertebrates, which during the same period was 0.8 percent. A new study shows that this trend has only accelerated, that is, we continue to eat animals until they die.
“Our results show that we are in the process of eating megafauna. Hunting for different parts of the carcass of certain animals, the followers of Asian traditional medicine also inflict heavy damage to the largest types. In the future, 70 percent of them will experience a further decline in the population, and 60% of species may become rare or even disappear from the face of the Earth,” says lead study author William ripple.

In addition to the direct destruction, the reduction of species also influenced by other factors. Many terrestrial animals are often accidentally caught in snares and traps, and the same applies to fishing nets in the water system. In addition, we observed degradation of the habitat of animals, which also have to fight. Collectively, these threats can have a serious negative impact on many species.
According to scientists, reducing the consumption of meat should be the first step. Refusal of support of “traditional medicine”, which uses animal parts — another good tip. However, a global problem requires global initiatives: the society as a whole must reconsider their behavior.
As reported by “Around the world. Ukraine”, artificial meat will be on store shelves in 2021.
