Moscow changes US Embassy address to honor Ukraine separatists

The city of Moscow on Wednesday changed the official address of the US Embassy in Moscow to honor pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine, a way of denouncing US support for Kyiv.

“The United States Embassy in Russia has a new official address,” Moscow City Hall announced in a statement.

The diplomatic mission is located now 1 Donetsk People's Republic Square, the name of one of two separatist territories in the Ukrainian Donbass whose independence Russia recognized in February, just before attacking Ukraine.

This name was given to a hitherto anonymous crossroads, adjoining the embassy. The names of the streets surrounding the diplomatic mission do not change.

This new official address was chosen after an online vote organized by the Moscow authorities and in which 278,684 people took part, according to the press release from the town hall .

The maneuver is reminiscent of a similar measure in the United States. In 2018, a portion of the avenue along the Russian Embassy in Washington DC was named “Boris Nemtsov Plaza”, Russian opponent murdered in 2015 right next to the Kremlin.
