Mulan : why Li Shang is absent from the remake
In addition to the lack of songs and Mushu, the little dragon that came with the heroine, another character lighthouse is missing from the remake of Mulan, which will be released in the cinema on the 25th of march next : Li Shang. But why is the commander who is the love interest of Mul is absent from the adaptation in live-action ? The producer responds.
The beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Aladdin or The Lion King, the remake of Mulan released in the cinemas on the 25th of march next. But be careful, the adaptation in live-action made by Niki Caro should be quite different from the cartoon. Not only there will be no songs, but Mushu, the little dragon that came with the heroine, will be absent. This is not all because the character of Li Shang will also be absent and replaced by a new male character : Chen Honghui, interpreted by Yoson Year. Described as “confident and ambitious”, he will join the unit commander Tung and will become the “love interest” of Mulan, played by Liu Yifei. Why Li Shang is missing from the movie Mulan
A choice that the producer Jason Reed explained in an interview with Collider.
“We will have separate Li Shang in both characters. One became Commander-Tung (Donnie Yen), who is like her surrogate father and mentor in the film. The other is Honghui (Yoson An), which is on the same level as Mulan in the army.”, he explained, revealing then the reasons for this change. And the movement #MeToo, which allows victims of rape and sexual assault to testify and denounce, is not there for nothing : “I particularly think that in a period of #MeToo, have a commander who is also the love interest was very uncomfortable and we thought that this was not appropriate.”. Let’s hope that the fans understand this choice.
Appointment is on 25 march 2020 to the cinema to discover the Commander Tung and Chen Honghui.
