Nauseous odor, unbreathable atmosphere… 67 cats rescued from an unsanitary apartment in Avignon

Fin juillet, la société protectrice des animaux (SPA) a sauvé 67 chats vivant dans des conditions déplorables dans un appartement d’Avignon. L’atmosphère était irrespirable, et de nombreux animaux avaient besoin de soins immédiats.
“It was chaos,” Philippe Kayes, a lawyer for the SPA, tells La Provence. He talks about the nauseating smell and the distress of the felines. The intervention took place on July 26, 2024 after their owner, a man in his forties, was arrested at home for an unrelated matter.
An alarming discovery
Rescuers discovered about sixty cats crammed into a 60 m2 3-room apartment in Avignon. Most of the adults were healthy, but the young ones had serious problems: two kittens were one-eyed, others were sick or had parasites. Our colleagues report that a dead kitten was found near paracetamol, a product toxic to cats.“Did the owner try to treat him like that”?”, Kayes wonders.
All the cats were taken to the shelter in L’isle-sur-la-Sorgue, which was already saturated by summer abandonments. The SPA is looking for volunteers to help with the maintenance of the facilities.
Neglect or Noah's syndrome
Initially, the situation suggested Noah's syndrome, a disorder that leads to hoarding animals. But Philippe Kayes thinks more of neglect: “It could have gotten out of hand”. The owner, who has been there for less than a year, may have been overwhelmed by the many litters of kittens.
The owner risks a fine of 750 euros per animal for mistreatment and the confiscation of the cats. They could be put up for adoption, giving them a chance at a loving home.
