Nearly 200 people demonstrate in Montpellier to denounce the postponement of elections in Senegal

A demonstration for respect for democracy and electoral deadlines in Senegal took place this Saturday, February 17 in Montpellier.

Nearly 200 people demonstrated in the middle of the afternoon to denounce the postponement of the elections, initially scheduled for February 25. A decision unilaterally decreed by the current president.

A postponement of the elections at the initiative of the president

"The situation is confused at the moment, deplores Ndiaye Lamine, representative of the collective of the&# 39;s Senegalese opposition in Montpellier. The president wanted to run for a third term despite the Constitution. He canceled the elections on the eve of the opening of the electoral campaign." This postponement caused a political earthquake while the electoral deadlines have always been respected in this country since independence in 1960. "The constitutional council invalidated the law postponing the vote by ten months, explains the Montpellier resident. Power corrupts. Macky Sall no longer even respects the laws he passed…" The collective also denounces the arrest of the leader of the # 39;opposition Ousmane Sonko who was "thrown in prison and his N°2 too".

There are 1,500 Montpellier residents registered on the electoral lists to vote in Senegal. Their representatives demand "respect for democracy" and hope that elections will be held as soon as possible.
