“I will not participate in a right-wing government supported by the extreme right”, declared Carole Delga, adding that, if she were a member of parliament, she would vote for a motion of censure against Michel Barnier's government “because the choice of the President of the Republic does not respect the vote of the French”.

Less than a week after his appointment, the new occupant of Matignon is continuing his reflection on forming a “new government“, promising ruptures and that he will not will not be a "reshuffle".

Will Barnier find allies on the left ?

One of the major challenges for Mr. Barnier will be to find personalities from the left, which is already ready to overthrow him, including within a part of Macronie.

The socialist president of Occitanie reiterated her support for the nomination of Bernard Cazeneuve to Matignon, deploring the "primary responsibility" of the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, in choosing not to appoint him.

"What I defended within the Socialist Party, it is to have a strong mobilization for a man or a woman of the left. Bernard Cazeneuve was part of it. I regret that the leadership of my party did not wish to show support for Bernard Cazeneuve”, continued Ms Delga.

Asked about the refusal of the socialist leaders, Olivier Faure and Boris Vallaud, to participate in a meeting with Mr Barnier before he presents his general policy statement to the Assembly, she replied that it “is always better to have the will to dialogue and especially to provide solutions”.

The socialist mayor of Saint-Ouen (Seine-Saint-Denis), Karim Bouamrane, another critical voice of the PS leadership, indicated “having declined” a proposal to join the government.

“For me, that would be a compromise (…) We find ourselves with a right-wing Prime Minister validated by the National Rally, a Prime Minister under supervision“, he explained on franceinfo.

Mr. Bouamrane also regretted that the PS did not support the nomination of Bernard Cazeneuve. “Today's reality is catching up with us. We find ourselves with measures in a budgetary blueprint that will be assimilated to austerity. “We are going to have positions that will associate us with conservatism and we are going to enter into political instability because I remain convinced that Michel Barnier's government is going to be doomed to failure,” he lamented.
