NEW YORK | The State of New York submits now to quarantine visitors from 16 u.s. States where the pandemic progresses, a doubling of the number of States compared to last week, said Tuesday the governor Andrew Cuomo.
“We now have 16 States that meet the criteria for quarantine (…), 16 States are now subject to quarantine in New York,” said the governor.
Andrew Cuomo announced last week an initial list of eight States in the South and West of the United States subject to quarantine, including Florida and Texas.
The new list also includes the State of California, the most populous in the country. The 16 concerned States represent a total population equivalent to almost half of the american population.
This extension confirms the fear of New York (the State, which was for weeks the epicenter of the epidemic in the United States and has recorded more than 31 000 people died from the coronavirus according to the Johns Hopkins university) to see the epidemic now net reflux come back as a boomerang.
“We try to keep the infection away from New York,” said the governor. After a first wave of contamination brought in the capital of the american economy by european visitors, “we are concerned that (the visitors of the other States infected) come to New York and cause the same problem,” he said.
The 16 States in which the visitors are supposed to be put in quarantine at their arrival in the State of New York are Alabama, Arkansas, the South Carolina and Northern Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas, in the South of the country, and the California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Idaho in the West, Iowa in the Midwest.
The visitors of these States will also be subject to quarantine in the neighboring States of Connecticut and New Jersey, whose governors had indicated last week that they would adopt the same measures as New York.
Remains to be seen how such a measure can be applied, since there are no border controls between States.
Mr. Cuomo had said last week that any person not complying with the quarantine and risked a fine of 1000 dollars.
